Eight Mistakes People Make When Planning an Indoor Playground
The expensive mistakes on an indoor play project are almost never made during installation. They are made months earlier, in a conversation where nobody realised a decision was being taken.
None of what follows is complicated. Each one is obvious in hindsight, which is precisely why it keeps happening — these are the questions that do not occur to you until someone points out that you should have asked them.
1. Choosing the structure before understanding the building
The natural way to start is by looking at play structures. You find one you like, you picture it in your space, and the project has a shape before anyone has measured anything.
It is the wrong order, and it is the mistake that generates most of the others on this list. Your ceiling height, floor plan, column positions and overhead services decide what can actually be built. Start with the building and the options open up — sometimes in directions you would not have considered. Start with a rendering and the next month is spent finding out what has to be removed from it.
2. Measuring ceiling height to the wrong point
Almost everyone measures to the deck, or to the highest point in the room. The number that matters is the distance to the lowest obstruction over the area where the structure will sit — a sprinkler head, a duct run, a light fixture, a beam.
In converted retail, warehouse or restaurant space the gap between those two numbers can be several feet, and it is usually discovered after a design has been drawn and approved. Correcting it means losing a level, which changes the structure, the capacity and the cost. Five minutes with a tape measure at the start prevents a redesign later.
3. Under-building for the youngest children
This is the single most common design error we see, and it follows a consistent pattern. The main structure gets planned carefully because it is the exciting part. Whatever floor area is left over gets allocated to the under-fives. The toddler area becomes a rounding error.
Then the facility opens and discovers that a large share of its traffic is under five, with nowhere appropriate to go. Children aged one to four need genuinely different equipment — lower, softer, built for interaction rather than challenge — not a smaller version of the main structure. And parents with a two-year-old and a seven-year-old will consistently choose the venue that serves both properly over the one that serves one well.
4. Sizing to the room instead of to demand
"I have four thousand square feet, what fits?" is the wrong question. The useful one is "how many children do I need to serve at my busiest hour, and what is the smallest structure that does it well?"
A structure larger than your peak demand is capacity you paid for and will never use — and it took floor area away from circulation, seating and operations that you very much will use. Room size sets a ceiling on what is possible. It should not set the target.
5. Treating supervision as a staffing decision
Supervision gets planned after the structure, as an operational matter to be handed to whoever is running the space. By then most of the decisions have already been made for you.
Whether an adult can see into the structure — including upper levels and enclosed sections — and whether an adult can reach and remove a child from any point in it are design properties. They shape tube diameters, level heights, access points and sightlines. A structure that cannot be seen into produces anxious parents and incidents nobody witnessed, and no amount of staffing fixes it afterwards.
6. Designing as though only children use the space
A play area has two sets of users, and the adults are usually left out of the brief entirely.
Where do parents sit? Can they see the structure from there without standing up? Is there a surface for a coffee, a power outlet, a reason to stay? This sounds like a comfort question and it is actually a commercial one. In a family entertainment center, a parent who cannot see their child leaves after forty minutes instead of staying and buying food. In a church, whether a first-time parent feels comfortable leaving their child at all determines whether that family comes back. Seating competes with the structure for floor area, which is exactly why it has to be in the plan from the start rather than fitted into what remains.
7. Comparing quotes that are not comparable
Two quotes arrive. One is noticeably lower. It is not obvious why, so the assumption is that one supplier is simply more competitive.
Often the difference is what is inside the number. A quote covering equipment alone is not a quote for a playground — design, freight, site preparation and installation are real costs, and if they are not in the figure you are looking at, they are still coming. Before comparing any two numbers, confirm that both cover design, production, shipping and installation complete, and ask what is explicitly excluded. A supplier who quotes a total delivered and installed price is giving you something you can actually plan against.
8. Judging equipment by how it looks
At a glance, most indoor play structures look broadly similar. Bright colours, netting, slides, tubes. The differences that determine how a structure performs over ten years are almost entirely invisible in a photograph.
Steel gauge, padding density and resilience, netting specification, hardware quality, how the fabrics hold up under repeated cleaning — these decide how often a structure needs service, how it ages, and how long it stays safe. They are also where the largest quality differences between suppliers sit. Ask any supplier where their components are manufactured, and ask for the answer in writing. It is a reasonable question with a straightforward answer, and what comes back — along with how quickly — tells you a great deal about who you are dealing with.
The pattern underneath all eight
Every one of these is cheap to fix at the start and expensive to fix later. That is not a coincidence — it is what defines a planning mistake.
They also share a cause. Each happens when a decision gets made implicitly, by default, because nobody identified it as a decision. The ceiling height nobody re-measured. The toddler area nobody sized. The seating nobody allocated. The quote nobody asked what was excluded from.
The most useful thing you can do early in a project is slow down long enough to notice what you are deciding. It is a short conversation, and it is the highest-return time you will spend on the whole thing.
