Indoor Playground Safety and Compliance Guide
Every company in this industry says their equipment is safe. The claim is so universal that it carries no information at all.
What separates suppliers is not whether they say it. It is whether they will hand you the documentation that proves it, and how quickly. This guide covers the standards commercial indoor play equipment is built to, what compliance actually requires, and what you should ask any supplier to produce before you sign — including us.
The standards that apply
Commercial indoor play equipment in North America is governed primarily by ASTM, the consensus standards covering the design, manufacture and installation of soft-contained play equipment — structural requirements, entrapment criteria, impact attenuation and the clearances between them. CPSC publishes the Consumer Product Safety Commission's playground safety guidance, and CSA covers Canadian installations while being referenced well beyond them.
European regulations apply to our work in that market, and in several respects they are stricter than the North American equivalents. Where they are, we build to the stricter requirement regardless of where the project sits. That is not a marketing position — it is simpler to run one specification than two.

Compliance is a set of documents, not a claim
"Meets ASTM standards" means nothing on its own. Compliance is demonstrated through paperwork: certification for the components used, documentation of the structural design, and a record that installation was completed to specification.
A supplier building to standard has these on file and produces them without hesitation, because gathering them was part of building the thing. A supplier who needs time, or who answers a documentation question with a reassurance, is telling you something. That reaction is more informative than anything in a brochure.
What to ask any supplier, including us
Six requests. Send them to everyone you are considering and compare what comes back.
Which standards the equipment is designed and certified to, in writing. Component-level certification documentation. Confirmation of where components are manufactured. The installer's qualifications, and whether installation is performed by the supplier's own crews or subcontracted. Written warranty terms covering equipment and installation, which are frequently different. And a post-installation inspection record.
None of these are unusual or difficult to produce. That is the point of asking.
Why component origin is a safety question
Our components come from American and European suppliers. That is a safety position before it is a quality position.
Equipment manufactured to aggressive cost targets is, in our direct experience, frequently less durable and in some cases not compliant with applicable standards despite representations to the contrary. Equipment that fails needs more frequent service, costs more over its life than it saved at purchase, and in the worst case fails in a way that injures a child and ends a facility's relationship with the families it serves.
We are not asking anyone to take our word for this. We are asking you to require documentation from every supplier on your list, and to notice who provides it easily.
Safety is designed in, not added on
A safe play environment is designed that way from the first sketch, and four properties determine it.
Supervision and access. An adult must be able to accompany, reach, respond to and remove a child from any point in the structure. That requirement shapes tube diameters, level heights and access points on every level.
Fall protection. Soft-contained design substantially reduces the risk of falls from raised height, protrusion injuries and sharp-edge injuries — but only when clearances, netting and padding are specified correctly. The design principle does not survive poor execution.
Age separation. Putting a two-year-old and a ten-year-old in the same play element is a design failure, not a supervision problem.
Impact surfacing. Specified to the applicable standard for the equipment height, with fall zones kept genuinely clear — of walls, columns, furniture and other equipment.
